What do you think the hp gain for an aftermarket pipe is, roughly?

Proly 4-5 HP... Just a guess. I think typically it's 10%

thats a good gain, i cant wait until I get mine...Im 15 so money doesnt come easy...how much hp gain do you think vforce reeds give a kdx, combined with the r&b mod?

dont be to expecting you really dont notice a whole lot of improvement. There is some but pipes are expensive for the little Hp they do give you.

Best bang for the buck after jetting. I noticed a big improvement after putting on a real pipe. Ryan... your bike still ain't right is my guess.

2nd that.

Just one note, after the pipe/jetting....If money's tight instead of a v-force try to get a better suspention under the bike. All the power in the world is nothing if you can't get it to the ground or control it. The other options you mentioned don't really yield a top HP dyno gain, but rather throttle response, torque, and rideability. Low-end seat of the pants improvements...

I was going to say that, too. Even if overall HP doesn't change, a lot of times you get quicker or smoother throttle response, a wider power curve, an earlier one, or some other improvement that might not necessarily include "more HP".

My KDX only has the pipe and silencer and Pro reeds, and I'm plenty happy with the actual power. What I'd like to change would be the weight and the way it carries that weight.

Okay, so is the pipe the only simple thing I can do to it, to add horsepower?

Have RB do the head and carb. These two are especially noticeable with the pipe and VF 3 reeds. All you have to do is pull them and send them in, that simple.

For me, the biggest gain I got was from the RB head work. I have a 220 and ride at very high altitude though. The 220's have low compression to start with, and the altitude makes it even worse. I also have a Gnarley woods pipe (mistake) and the DF-3 cage (nice boost in low end throttle response), and the RB carb mod. In my opinion, no 220 should be without both RB mods. They bring the bike much closer to what Kawi should have done in the first place. so in my not-so-humble opinion, here's what you do in order (not including fixing the suspension and putting good tires on):

1) RB carb and head work (don't even think about doing one without the other, and get the knurled air screw)

2) Pipe (if 220, get an FMF Gnarley desert or maybe a Pro Circuit pipe if you want it to fit. If you have a 200, decide if you want more low or high, and get the pipe for that. I think 220's need more high).

3) Reeds ( I like the Moto Tassanari DF-3) but some people like the bang for the buck of Boyesen 607's)

okay, great...and can someone give me a good explanation of what throttle response means? thanks!

Instantaneous response instead of building to a response. Good 'nuff?

Compare a highly modified KDX to a stock KDX.
The modified bike will be 'more' responsive and will rev up quicker/easier/cleaner compared the stock bike.

Look at it this way Ryan...If your happy with the way your bike is running now...wait till you get it jetted right and unlock the potential that your pipe really has...rocketship! :supz:

Ryan, NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
If you did not notice a gain in power through out Low 2 Top range than somethings wrong with you  or your bike :partyman:
I'll pick the later

From a previous post where Ryan was fouling a plug running 3/4 throttle to WOT I would guess he is about 3-4 sizes too large on his main jet.

P.S. In my experience you can run a couple of MJ sizes over and not foul the plug so I figure you got to be at least 3-4 sizes over to foul a plug. Of course it could be his silencer it plugged up or lack of adequate ignition coil energy to fire his plug at the higher engine speeds.

FWIW - I've always ended up running aftermarket pipes on the two strokes we've owned. I've never felt as much seat of the pants gain in HP, on any other bike, as I felt after installation of a pipe on a KDX.
