Kdx 200 h3 1997 kick starter nut

Post by Spud66 »

Hi all

Nearly finish a 4 month weekend project, however the kick starter nut has seen better days and needs replacing.
Any ideas what size it is or where I can find a replacement preferably in the UK.

It's an M12 nut thats fairly common to find. I can't recall the thread pitch, but it's easy to source. Do you have a tap & die set with a thread pitch gauge to measure it?

Last I knew that nut was still available from Kawasaki. Make sure to put some blue (medium) Loctite on it and torque it to spec.

I think I finally did see that nut become available again, but it was not available for almost a year. It may still not be available, perhaps I just recall seeing an eBay search for New Old Stock.

No Dye set unfortunately, ok I will search ebay and use blue lock tight when I find one. I will buy a selection of m12 nut one is bound to fit.

Thanks all.

I should emphasize that this should definitely be installed with thread locker.

I lost mine once, but luckily when I realized that I had lost my KX125 lever/KX250 kicker splines + KDX nut, and backtracked a quarter mile to find the kicker, but no nut to be found in the woods of course...

That reminds me that someone had used permanent red loctite, the highest strength variety apparently, on my '99 220 prior to my ownership, and the first time that I removed it, it was on there so hard that it actually damaged the threads removing the nut. Unless they were previously damaged and I didn't realize, but it was quite stuck. If you see any hint of red loctite, use a plastic welder or something maybe a quick hit with a torch to heat it up a bit.

That also brings to mind another fellow KDX rider in California told me that the owner or CEO of the Loctite Corporation is adamantly opposed to OHV trails out west, and lobbies to get them all shut down. He stressed to the community to use ThreeBond or other threadlocker alternatives, and not support Loctite for this reason.

Interesting. Going to try to look in to that.

DITTO! Ja, I used Three Bond and Yamabond a lot. One can always safety wire the nut, if paranoid.

When I was a teen, I used 3M weatherstrip adhesive (yellow) for thread locker. It was inexpensive and large tube lasted a log time. Due to color & sticky, stringy behavior, we called it, "Gorilla snot."

So far, I found informal & formal information a decade apart in time. The items appear contradictory to each other.

It's some German guy who got the CEO job in 2021. I couldn't find anything he ever said.
