That'll help or you can do like a lot of us have done and completely remove the lid.

Ok cool thanks. But wouldn't having some of the lid left help keep more mud\water out of the airbox, or not make much difference?
Cheers

Depends. I rode mine for years without issue even in super muddy and wet conditions without issue. That said, I stay away from deep creek/river crossings and it's only really wet here a short part of the year. We do have some of your fellow New Zealanders here on the forum so hopefully they can chime in on their experiences or others with similar riding conditions.

I took my lid off years ago and do all my riding in the Pacific Northwest with plenty of creek crossings, never had an issue. Regardless of whether you remove the lid or cut the hole bigger you will need to rejet for best performance.

I cut out the airbox, and as mentioned above had to up the pilot jet size as I bottomed out the airscrew while tweaking. Anyway, I thought now was a good time to take it for a first ride, quick couple of laps around the neighbourhood (no dirt nearby unfortunately). Was impressed !!!
I have 2x 250cc 80's MX bikes and this KDX wasn't too far from them to be honest, slightly softer but not drastically. Happily lifted the front wheel in 3rd under its own doing.
Only issue I have noticed so far is that the clutch was a bit "grabby" ie. not much lever pull between in & out. Has fresh belray gearsaver 80w. No idea on plates\springs at this stage. any ideas?
Anyway happy days!

Take it apart and check it out. Look for a notched basket.
