What KDX do I have?

Just picked up what I believe to be a 1980 kdx250. The frame has the A after the 250. I’m wondering if it’s a 79? I’m new to these bikes and can’t figure out online what it is, because people often have the wrong info. It has twin rear shocks. And a LEFT side exit for the exhaust. Did they make these air cooled bike in the year 1979, or they start 1980? Is 1980 left or right side exit exhaust?

Post up the frame number and our resident guru should be able to decipher it for you.

Welcome to kdxrider.net.

It is a 1980 model. 1980 KDX250 was the only year KDX250 with twin shocks. The only 1979 model KDX was the KDX400.

I think this is how it went.

1980 KDX250-A1
1981 KDX250-B1
1982 KDX250-B2
1983 KDX250-B3
1984 KDX250-B4

They didn't make a KDX250 in the USA from 1985 - 1990. 1980 - 1984 were air cooled. 1991 - 1994 were liquid cooled. 1989 was the first year for a liquid cooled KDX, the KDX200.
