Have to blip throttle while kick over when warmed up

My 220 starts right up with the choke when it is cold. Once warm I have to blip the throttle while simultaneously kicking every time. Why could that be? It’s done this since the bike was bone stock but still does it with all the mods I have had done. Thanks

What happens if you don't blip the throttle? Does it start but then have a real low idle like its going to die? Or does it not start at all unless you give it gas? How many kicks does it take to fire the bike up hot and cold? It's a habit of mine that I end up giving it a tiny blip when I kick it over. I forgot I did it until I rode a 22 KTM 350 SXF last weekend and was doing it every time I hit the starter button.
On my 220 it settles into an idle faster with a quick blip. If I kick it over no throttle while warmed up, it sounds like its going to die for a couple seconds, then it levels out.
The only carbureted 2 strokes I've ever seen with instantaneous perfect idle, no throttle is a Yamaha Banshee. I've seen multiple ones like that.

Without a blip it usually won’t start unless I am patient. I It’s does have that tendency to idle low like you described if I don’t give it enough of a blip. I wonder why.

Generally that's a jetting issue. Have you gone through the jetting process on it to see if it makes any difference?

Yes I have tried both a 45 and 48 pilot in various air screw positions and it still does it. I didn’t notice a huge difference between the 2 jet sizes.

You said you tried different jets. However, like asked by bufftester, have you actually followed the jetting guide to determine if you have the correct pilot jet? Even at sea level a 45 I think would be rich. For comparison, I'm at 2000ft at run a 38pj.

I actually didnt follow the pilot jetting procedure correctly after rereading it. I’m gonna give it another shot. I’ll turn the screw to the point with the fast idle and if I am in between 1 to 2 1/2 turns out it should be right. Thanks

I wouldn't read too much into it, I've found my KDX always starts best when hot with the throttle cracked just ever so slightly. (Barely a hair more than taking the slack out of the cable.)

Mine is also properly jetted and likes a hair of throttle to start. Catches me out when I ride my buddy’s KLX 250S every time. That thing won’t start with any throttle!

Check out this old video. I don’t agree with everything this kid says but this is a great example of how the rpm’s should respond to changes in the air screw when it has the correct size pilot jet. Then you would ride it and make the small 1/8 turn +/- for the best throttle response. He starts messing with it at about 2:30

Thanks, maybe it’s just a quirk of the Kdx.

I think it is common to have to crack the throttle when the engine is warm.

Yeah, I agree. I really had to think about it, because it's just second nature now, but I also crack throttle a bit when warm and my bike is jetted really good.
