missing paint mark for paw gear on kips mainshaft

Just tore down my sons used 05 KDX200. Upon disassembly, found that the p.o. had damaged the shaft coming from the right side cover that controls the kips valves, you know, the one with the left hand threaded nut on top. Looks like he tried to remove the nut counterclockwise and without holding the paw gear stable. Anyway, so the paw gear was not even touching the kips mainshaft. My manual says there should be a white paint mark on the mainshaft to line up with the dot on the paw gear and if has worn off to repaint it before removing the paw gear. Well my paint mark is gone and the paw gear had already been moved. How to I realign these gears?

There is one tooth that is different and a hole on the pawl. Both of them need to be lined up and all will be good.
