The Weight

So this happened...
the Steahly off road flywheel weight had a come apart and wrecked the cover. One of the set screws backed out. There is three of them. I checked when I installed it, considered putting on some threadlocker on 'em, but I didn't because they are peened in there...This shouldn't be possible, but it happened to me.

Murphy's law i guess, If it can happen, it will happen.

Any other damage beside the cover?

Will you keep the weight, or do without?

Bummer. Never trust anything if you don't have to! When I install a flywheel weight for someone that has the little set screws I always do so with some medium strength (blue) loctite on them. Just gives me peace of mind knowing they're not going to come back to me with a failure like yours. You can probably save that cover using some epoxy like JB Weld (not the putty type) or similar.

That said, I have always been baffled on why anyone would need/want a flywheel weight on any '89+ KDX. It already comes with a huge honking flywheel that is bigger than that comes on much larger and powerful bikes.

Doesn't seem to be any other damage. I'll probably put it back in with some loctite and try to peen 'em a little better. I found a cover on ebay, so that's on the way. True that the KDX comes with plenty of flywheel. This is probably not the most necessary of mods, but I kinda like it. It chugs along through the more technical stuff. Makes it that much harder to stall. Seems easier to find traction, and I stay off the clutch as much. So that probably keeps everything a little cooler.

Who the hell needs a flywheel weight on the KDX?!

As a guy who had my actual flywheel come apart on me, (see here: viewtopic.php?p=215505#p215505 )the last thing I'd be doing is adding more weight to an already heavy flywheel.

Nobody needs one.
Who the hell would mod anything on any bike ever?

Damn right! :-)

It might be the hot setup for where he rides. Hell, SS109 is still waiting for me to mail him a tree so he can plant it where he rides and have at least one there instead of catuseses.

I've got a few that are already broken in I could send him.

I'm not against mods, nut the KDX already has a heinously heavy flywheel. Can't see why you'd need to add more weight to it, but if you feel you need it, give'er.

Yeah, that was my kind of thinking as well. I guess if you ride nothing but super low speed technical stuff a FWW probably would be ideal.

I know the KDX has more flywheel than most. That's one of the things I love about it. My step dad has been running a weight on his KDX for about 10 years now and never had a problem so I thought I'd try it out. I was glad I had it this day. next time I go up that mountain I'l probably drop a tooth on the countershaft too.
