1996 KDX200 fron wheel reinstall

Post by KDXDev »

I recently had a front tire changed and am in the process of trying to put everything back together and I cannot for the life of me get any torque on the wheel without spinning the black odometer housing and stopping the wheel from spinning freely. I have the collar on the left side and I am lining up the notches on the housing with the stop on the right side forks, but as I tighten up the axle, it seems like it is forcing the forks away from each other and pushing the housing away from the fork. I am at my wits end! Please send help! lol

Do you have a service manual?
If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

The front axle is a straight forward install. Lube it up, insert it through the front wheel and thread it into the left side fork body. Then tighten down the axle while holding the front wheel from turning. Unless you have some tweaked forks it should tighten right up. Torque the axle and then tighten the upper two pinch nuts to 1/2 final torque and cycle the suspension a bunch of times and then tighten all 4 pinch nuts to final. It helps to remove the front brake caliper so you are fighting one less thing trying to line it all up.

Is the odo housing lined up correctly?

When I had KLX forks I had the same issue, I ended up breaking a tab off the stupid odo housing. Lube up the ODO housing where it meets the bolt with some WD or whatever, helps keep it from being grabbed by the bolt and spinning.
