Welcome to kdxrider.net.
The best tip I have is one that doesn't even cause you to get your hands dirty. Buying a service manual is the best money you can spend on your bike. Whether the OEM base manual and KDX220R supplement manual or the Cyclepedia manual, a service manual is my best tip.

I would check to see if your piston is stock. If so replace it as soon as you can.

Best bang for your bike are not the sexy ones. A manual like already mentioned, getting it jetted properly, and getting your suspension serviced/dialed in are the top three things you can do for your bike.

One might want to spend the money to get everything working properly and refreshed before slapping on the shiny parts. :-) We are all guilty of it, though.

I have the owners manual.. definitely think the jetting could use a tweak. Do you know where I might find aftermarket suspension parts for it? Or is there a newer fork swap I could do?

I was talking about the service manual. It has the torque specs and procedures you need to work on your bike.
Jetting can almost always use some tweaking!

Here's a link to the jetting guide to really dial it in:
viewtopic.php?f=105&t=1156 Not much available as far as aftermarket parts per se but getting the correct springs for your weight, possible revalving/gold valves, setting your sag correctly, and dialing in your compression and rebound settings can totally change how a bike performs for the better or for worse.
There have been plenty of front fork swaps and even a couple of rear shock swaps done. Check out the Fork Conversion subforum and read up if you're thinking about going that route:

Suspension! I waited because I didn't want to spend the money. Eventually I gave in and brought it to a quality tuner here in NorCal. After 10 minutes on the bike, I was laughing at myself and wondering why it took so long to get it done. Tuning the suspension to my weight and riding style was a game changer. Jetting is a must, but that should be standard procedure. After that, IMS pegs, your preferred grips, and tires. All of your touch points and the bike to ground touch points matter the most to me. If you still have some extra money, then go for the FMF gnarly rev pipe and silencer. Great bikes all around, but certainly need to be updated a bit. Good luck and enjoy!

x2 on the suspension upgrades. Several variations that you can do from new valving of forks to fork swap. Also, good tires that work well with the terrain you ride on.
