Hello everyone:
I have been roaming around the site for some time now and finally made it official by joining.. thanks for letting me in. I have a 2003 KDX 200 and my son has a 2000 Kdx 220. I have a question regarding FMF Gnarly pipes.. We put a gnarly woods pipe on the 220, which is awesome. The KDX 200 came with a Gnarly pipe but it is different shape then the woods version.. I suspect it is one of the other gnarly models, desert /rev? The 200 has noticeably less power off of idle then the 220, even with a 13/50 gear set up. I know that it is hard to compare the low end of the two bikes, but can anyone tell me which gnarly pipe this is? thanks in advance!

The desert pipe is about 11" around at the largest diameter. The woods pipe is about 14" around at the largest diameter.

A 200 is more of a mid-high powerband (even more so with the Desert pipe). The 220 is more of a low-mid powerband (and the woods pipe helps that). Porting and carb combine to determine the powerband. Being 216 cc instead of 198 cc helps with more power.

I have been following the site for some time now. I am a honda guy and have few quads and a street bike, but I always new that the KDX was the best woods machine for us.. We bought my son's KDX this past summer.. He loves it.. Once we got the first one, we did not look back.. I recently found my '03 200 and have been going through it.. I will say that I prefer the 220.. Its kinda funny how different the two bikes are.. I measured the pipes and the 220 has a smaller diameter pipe on it.. The 200 measures in around 14" diameter. I am going to pull them and see if I can find a serial number or model number but I suspect i will not.. There is definite difference in the geometry between the two.. I agree that there is not replacement for displacement and that you cannot compare the low end of the 220 to the 200. Either way both bikes are awesome.. thanks for the info and here are a couple of picks of the bikes.. thanks!

Hello neighbor. Nice pair of bikes. Check for a part number at the top mounting tab of the pipe.

Like kick said, check the tab. I think they used to say K-30 / K-35, something like that.

It's a little harder to tell the difference in size because of the pipe guard on my 220, but it's definitely bigger.

You are so observant! I made sure that I only got pics from one side of the bikes so that you couldn't say anything about my chains, but then you catch this! Honestly, I just picked up my 200 in January and never noticed it. Looks like I'll be "re-clocking" it.

Thanks GATOROC, I appreciate the info. When I get some time off from work I am going to pull both pipes off and look for model numbers. I will also try switching them and see what I got.. I presume the fitment will be the same between the 200 and 220? My 200 also has a fredette torque ring in it between the pipe and the cylinder.. Not sure if it makes a difference but I will leave it in.. thanks again.

It would be interesting to see a comparison after you simply switch pipes. Most people, recommend the woods pipe for the 200 and the Rev/desert pipe for the 220. I've run both on my 220 and agree with this recommendation. Remember the design purpose of the 220 was to increase low end over the 200. Without some engine work (RB head, carb, etc) you'll likely never get the 220 to match the high rev performance of the 200. I'd start by simply switching the pipes. That may go a long way by itself. Then just RIDE! They are both great bikes! Go beat them up!

Put your next $$ into suspension. Biggest bang for the buck !

Agree with Doakley, the Woods pipe should be on the 200 and the desert pipe on the 220. Then you'll want to jet them both correctly. Also, spend the money on the suspension before anything else, it really does make a noticeable difference. Nice looking pair of bikes!

Welcome to the team! Great looking bikes. As others have said, spend your money on suspension! I did on both my KDXs and it was worth it's weight in gold. Enjoy!
