rebuilding my 2001 220R.Bought it in February. I've done:

RB head and carb
rebuilt shock
clean and grease suspension bearings
new air cleaner
new power reeds
Staying with the stock pipe until I ride it some, FMC silencer

Now I have to decide on sprocket ratio and new tires. New England single track mostly and not racing. At least not competitively. Maybe some old man enduros.

Should I stay with stock ratio 13:47 or add a couple on the back?
tire suggestions? too many to choose from, makes my head spin.

Personally I like 13/49. Just seems to make 3rd a little more usable. Would you describe your NE single track as rocks and roots? You might give that Tusk Recon gummy tire a try.

I settled on 13/48 gearing. It works everywhere for me. Even in the nasty rock gardens we ride.

For a front tire I love the Goldentyre GT216AA in the 90/100 fatty size. It's been my go to front for years now. However, I did just pick up the Tusk Recon front to try out (also a fatty), since it is less than half the price of the GT, so we'll see how it does. As for rear tires, I'm a gummy fan. They don't last nearly as long but the traction is much better than traditional tires. You gotta decide how often you're willing to buy tires vs traction. I really like the IRC VE33S Gekkota gummy. I can get 500 good trail miles out of it before traction really starts to drop off. Got a brand new 220Ride gummy rear to try but haven't mounted it yet. If you run Tubliss and want long life with decent traction I recommend the Sedona MX907HP in the 120 width at 5psi. I can get an entire year of riding on one of those but the traction isn't as good as a gummy.

The stock 220 piston is a known issue. You should replace it with a wiseco.

Thanks for the info. I purchased the IRC Volcanduro VE33S 110/100 rear and an M59 Bridgestone for the front. The bike came with a tight top end with a Wiseco piston. The 220Rides are on back order. I'm going with the 13/49 as doakley suggested. Now I just need to put her back together and start riding again. Looking forward to my first ride, it's been a long time coming....
