Hi Guys,

I am wanting to replace the headlight and housing (front plate?) on my 99' 220. The housing has been in pretty rough shape since I bought the bike, but I busted the screw mounts on the lamp last season. I am thinking of getting the OEM to keep things original, which I think I can get both parts on Rocky Mountain for about $130. However I wanted to see if there were any real differences between the OEM and the UFO (or any other brand) before I made the decision. Thoughts or suggestions?

Side question...Is UFO not making plastics any more? All I see is the headlight on their site now. Should I try to find plastics while I can? I would eventually want to replace all of the plastics and graphics (any fairly similar to original graphics out there for this bike?).

Look at the Baja Designs headlight with the LED. It seems like a good one.

Is it this one? https://www.bajadesigns.com/products/Sq ... Light.asp Those lights do look pretty slick...and a hella lot brighter. Any necessary wiring changes? Is the stator rewind necessary? Turning the lights on and off is about as far as my electrical knowledge goes...

That is it, but they have another one that if the bike has a rewired, higher output stator, it can throw out even more light.

For a normal light, I'd just get a UFO brand myself.

For a regular light I've been happy with my Polisport MMX headlight. Yeah, it doesn't even begin to compare to the Baja Designs unit but it also doesn't carry the price. Plus, I like the looks better than the stock unit.

I have run the MMX and the Acerbis DHH certified which is a DOT approved one. Currently running an Acerbis DHH (non-certified with the 2 separate bulbs) it's not DOT but my bike isn't plated. 1 bulb is a pencil and the other a flood and I've wired them to both be on at the same time, gives nice light, but there are some newer LEDs that put it to shame

I picked up this Oregon ufo light on eBay. I got my bike plated so I may get the blinkers working eventually.

I got the Acerbis DHH in today. I realize I'm going to have to wire up some connectors. Problem is...I'm a complete doofus when it comes to wiring (or anything electrical for that matter). Any input on how I need to wire these up and what connectors to use? Do I wire both lights? I only have an on and off switch, not a high beam, low beam.

With the stock wiring and switch you can only have low or high, not both. The benefit is that you can mostly keep the OEM wiring intact, the drawback is you only get hi or lo. You would take your existing bulb socket and either cut it off or use tap splices to run the black wire to the ground terminal on the new headlight, and the red wire to either the lo or hi terminal on the new headlight. The weird white connector that is kind of on the side of the housing is a position light and you don't need it so ignore that part. The bottom pic is the headlight connection and should be three terminals. You just need to get crimp on spades that fit (Autozone, Napa, etc carry them). I have one of these DHH lights somewhere, I'll have to look at it to see if the terminals are marked or not.

If you want hi/lo/off you would need to get a 3 way switch (Trailtech and Moose make a nice combination headlight/kill switch) and wire it according to its directions

Thanks bufftester! Great info. I was wondering what the white connector was for. Glad I don't need it. I think I can figure it out now if I can find the right spades. I stopped by Napa yesterday, but all the ones they had were way too big. Go figure. Anytime I go in there, they don't have what I need.

Update: Got the DHH light back from the sign shop for numbers and got it installed. Install was pretty easy once I had the right connectors. These are the connectors I used. NAPA didn't have them (go figure). However, O'Reillys had them.

Thanks for your insight. I'm pretty sure it's the high beam. Eventually, I want to get a switch for both, but it will work for now. I hardly use the lights anyway unless we're camping out somewhere.
