Welcome to kdxrider.net. Thanks for joining and ... participating!
1998 KDX220R-A5 is the "full name". It is the "A" series of KDX220R. KDX220R is the technically correct model name, but many just drop the "R" and say "KDX220". The "B" series was not sold in the USA and came with street legal equipment for the countries it was sold in.
1995 - 2006 KDX200 models in the USA (and maybe elsewhere) are the "H" series of KDX200's. The "A" series of KDX200's was 1983 - 1985.
The 1995 -2006 KDX200 and 1997 - 2005 KDX220R are almost identical. The cylinder has different porting, has a larger bore, larger piston, different power valves (don't want it stick in there too far and hit the piston), smaller carburetor, and it also came with an o-ring chain. The KDX200 came with a non-ring chain. The KDX200 has different porting (and powerband), different piston / rings, larger carburetor and the previously mentioned non-ring chain.
The most important change between them... I have saved that for last... STICKERS!!

Thank you so much for the information. I just ordered a service manual for it and when it arrived I saw the different letters and was panicking that i would have the wrong manual. I look forward to learning about these bikes and picking everyones brains lol. Again thank you for the info

If you are shoppig for OEM manuals, that bike needs the KDX200 manual, plus the KDX220R Supplement Manual. The supplement manual covers the different cylinder, piston, rings, carburetor, etc. that are different than the KDX200.

OK, you will be in fine shape then. They are the only company that makes an aftermarket manual for the 1989 and newer models. They have (or had, not sure) one for 1989 - 1994 models also. Congratulation on buying a good one. I have that and the OEM manual. Both are good.

This post was deleted.
Please leave kdxrider.net out of the illegally copied / copyright infringing manual stuff. Thanks.

Congrats on the new bike, she looks clean and already has some of the aftermarket goodies you'd want to get.

Looks like a great find, especially in the coast where things tend to be left outdoors and rust. You are going to love the bike regardless of experience level!
