Hey all, I’m just curious as to what kind of metal the expansion chamber is made out of and if it is safe to do a burnout of carbon buildup with a torch and air compressor. Thanks!

What would I do with the oven cleaner? Just pour it in and let it soak? And thanks! I’ve been trying to find a forum solely around KDX!!!

Oven cleaner will work better if you heat the pipe a bit. Just heat, doesn’t have to be searing hot.
Keep oven cleaner off aluminum.

Just spray it in and let it set.
If it is caked up bad around the entrance, one could scrape it off with an old screwdriver. No matter what, it's going to make a big mess.
Thanks for joining!

Burning out carbon is a myth, you are burning out oil, the carbon remains

The old school remedy for carbon build up removal is a soak in hot caustic soda, (lye) solution. This is found in many old MC books 1940 / 1950s era with precautions not to use on aluminum. I've tried it a few times but haven't been very impressed.
For cleaning the OEM spark arrestor, page 36 of the KDX 200/220 owners manual says to remove the drain plug at the bottom, start the engine, and with varying engine speeds tap on the muffler with a rubber mallet until carbon particles are purged from the muffler. I would think something a bit harder than a rubber mallet would be more effective.

I think E-Z Off is the home version of caustic soda. :-)
One needs to get the big chunks out first.

Torching the pipe and banging on it with a mallet will work to get off the big stuff, i just did it, but but its going to look real bad when your done, and dealing with hot pipe mallet fumes etc..... I would try the E Z off next time probably..... yep... sure would

Get a long wire braid and chuck it up in a drill. Let it flail around inside the pipe ON LOW speed!! If it comes out and hits you, you will be sorry!
Yes!! It will make a HUGE MESS!! Do NOT do it in a garage or even within close distance to a home.
