Hey Friends,

I am fairly new to the scene and recently purchased a 2001 kdx220R. I am about a month in and have riden in the past but never owned.

A couple questions:

1. Do you recommend I swap out the stock piston on this bike? what piston you recommend(size and all)

2. I am looking to change the pip on it, I only want to change the silencer out. I see a lot use the FMF turbine core 2, is this what you recomment?

3. handle bars, grips and handguards - I will take any recommendations or links to sites that sell these items.

4. Anyone from Ontario Canada here who owns one of these?

Thanks much, safe ripping!

The stock piston must be changed. They are known for blowing up. Check what letter (a b c or d) it is and replace it with a forged piston of the same size. I like Wossner.

Welcome to kdxrider.net.

1. How do you know it has a stock piston? It was made in 2000. Maybe in the 20 years since the original piston was put in, someone changed it. One could check it and see if it was the stock piston.

Definitely check the piston. My preference is to refresh the top end on any 2s I buy right away. Then I KNOW what’s in it. If you can only change one or the other, pet the FMF Rev (Desert) pipe for the 220 and run the stock silencer. More bang for the buck. But if you are new, I wouldn’t change either for now. Keep the power mellow as you learn.
Just my $.02. Welcome to the forums! Go ride, spend money on gas (except for that piston).
