Hello, I took my 01 kdx 200 out today, its been sitting since sept 2019. started right up, when I start to ride and get to the point where it explodes/comes on the pipe it now goes flat..it ran VERY good when I put it away in september. power valve issue? I have never had the cylinder off. please help. JD

Your carburetor may need a quick cleaning. But, don't dip it in carburetor cleaner.

If it runs well until a particular point, such as when the main jet assumes prime fuel mixing, it may something simple(like a dirty main).

Or, the needle may have come unclipped, isn't moving with the slide, and is blocking the needle jet.

Not that I've ever had that happen, but, all things are possible.

Since its been sitting for 7 months I would also suspect carb. Did you drain all the fuel when you stored it? If not then definitely clean the carb.

Did you drain the fuel tank and bowl before letting it set that long?

uppdate. carb is cleaned ,petcock clean. it was running til it starved when I put it away last year. has NOT been sitting with gas in carb over winter. BUT still same problem, is gutless where it before storage would wheelie...must be power valve? took off big screw with big flat screwdriver on left side , black gas was running out.. what do you guys think? JD

How fresh is the fuel??

fuel is 3 days old. how can I see if the power valves is working when the bike is running and how can I be sure that all three valves is working?

Black gas out of the idle speed screw? Yeah, you really need to clean the carb better. While you're at it, flush your tank out to make sure it's clean and only fresh fuel goes back in there.

I read all the post's. I agree, re-clean the carb. Don't forget to check the Idle jet & needle & seat. Why not do the jet block gasket. Your in there so do it right.

No one answered your question though. Crank it up with that round power valve cover removed. As you Rev the engine you should see the valve mechanism rotate open.
Having said, I would clean the carb again. It is the most likely source of the problem from your description.

Thanks doakley,i have seen people do that on youtube, if it moves it works right? but can it still rotate like half way and then only work halfway too? or does it rotate all the way or not at all?

What if the right subvalve is missing or has stripped teeth?

What if the flapper is broken / not working?

Taking off the left cover or right cover does not show all.

You can take off the pipe to get a partial look, too.

i see now that the PV rack doesnt move hardly at all when I rev the bike up, so anything is stuck .I have taken the governor gear off. I dont think ant teeth are gone since it worked very good when it was put away, and I see that the main flapper is down and won't go up even with me using on it..

Does it move when pushed nomally? I do not know, is why I ask.

could be that while it was sitting the carbon build up has gummed up your PV. Give it a good cleaning.

uppdate, it did not move almost at all. now I took off the gear on the governor obs left hand tread. started wiggling it back and forth and shot wd 40 up in the main flapper , it actually came loose! tried the bike- power is back. now the weird part reving the bike seeing in the rack hole on the stator side the rack does not nearly move like before but the bike runs MUCH better. WHY?
