KDX 200 Rear Shock Rod Diameter

I recently purchased a well used 1990 KDX 200. The rear shock needed rebuild so I purchased an All Balls 37-1007 head which was listed as compatible. I got the head and it didn't fit. I measured the rod diameter and it turns out to be 16mm. Is this normal for this bike? Could this be a shock from a KX or something? Would a 37-1003 head fit?

I am certain that it is 14 mm shock rod diameter on USA 1986 + USA LDX shock rods.

Post a pic of the shock. (and anything else you think might be from a non-E model)

The shock had a really damaged sticker that had warnings like don't burn or puncture. The sticker said it was a Kawasaki but didn't say the model. Could this be a KX shock?

That looks like a 1990 / 1991, somewhere around there KX125 / KX250 shock. The shaft would be 16 mm, and the bladder would be 103 mm tall.

Look around at some pictures online. The reservoir shape is unique to those 2 or 3 years.

Shock spring height will be taller than KDX also.

The taller height of the shock will make the back end geometry off from stock.

Would this be a bad thing? Should I try to replace it with the original?

I just measured the bladder to be around 96mm. I measured from the base of the rubber part.

Stock is 88 mm on a 1986 + KDX. (when they sell them with a measurement)

Depepnding on your budget, I would look into getting one from a 1989 - 1994 KDX200, then have it rebuilt.

Depending on your weight, the KX spring might be better for you.

I am about 190 lbs and I am on a tight budget so I will probably stick with this.

As best I remember from 2006 or so measurment, KX shock shaft length is 7 mm longer on 1990 or 1991 that I measured.

OK, good luck on the rebuild. Read up on getting it shortened about 7 mm if you can. Race Tech offers some spacers.
