If another was NWer was considering an AZ vacation (for about 6 months per year):
Where would be best place to locate in Phoenix area to get to the most KDX-friendly riding?

Hit up SS109 on here, he's in Tuscon and races a lot of the desert stuff down there, may have some helpful info for you.

Yeah, got my last Capitol Forest ride a couple weeks ago and it was muddy fun. May drag the bikes over to my Dad's in Mattawa this weekend for some of that winter desert fun

Maricopa county is a little North of me but I have ridden up there on occasion. Sorry, I have so many fun riding spots near me I don't have much need to get up there!
That said, the Boulders OHV area (also known as the Mile Markers or Hieroglyphic Mountains) is my favorite up there. It has mild to super technical trails and you could ride up there for a while and not ride the same trail twice. So, Northwestern Phoenix or Wickenburg is probably where I would stay. Here is my vid from the race held there:

Here is a good resource for riding in AZ:
https://azstateparks.com/where-to-ride Just remember, recently it was changed that out of state riders must purchase an OHV decal ($25) to ride all public lands and if you ride AZ State Trust lands you must purchase an AZ State Trust Land permit ($15 individual/$20 family) for it in addition to the OHV sticker. I normally ride State Trust land myself.
You can find the links to purchase your non-resident OHV decal here:
https://azstateparks.com/ohv-laws-regulations (about half way down the page)
Buy your State Trust permit online here:
https://asld.secure.force.com/recreationalpermit/
If you want to ride around Southern Arizona let me know. My KDX and I are always up for a ride and I'm happy to show you around. We have the brand new Red Springs trail system (USFS )near Amado, AZ that my club developed and recently opened, Marana trails (where I ride most - STL), San Manuel trails (STL), Reddington Pass (USFS) and lots of smaller areas not on any map. I have several vids of the areas I ride on my Youtube channel:

If you have any questions, just ask! As an AZ State Parks OHV Ambassador answering questions is kinda my thing!

Thank you very much SS. Great info! I will do some more digging.
My riding buddy here (WR250F) is building a house in Wickenburg, which prompted this inquiry. so that sounds like a great place to start! I’d love to see the south, also. Time to stock-pile vacation days for some road-trips.
