Bought another '86 model last week. It looked good in the pics, but it does have some issues. Biggest thing is I don't think the oil was ever changed. Where can I have this motor rebuilt?

On a more serious note, what’s the problem with rebuilding it yourself? Time?

Never done it and don't really need that project.

I wouldn’t doubt there’s someone local to you that you can bring your motor to. Unless you’re looking for a higher caliber mechanic. Jeff Fredette would probably do it, and be happy to do so. Frpoffroad.com. I think he’s in Ohio or something. Don’t remember exactly.

Why do you think it needs to be rebuilt?

If it were me, I would give the bike a safety check, change the fluids & go ride it. See what happens.

It doesn't necessarily need a rebuild. I would pull the clutch cover and do a thorough check on the clutch (disassembly necessary) and replace parts if needed. Then fill with fresh oil, run the engine easily up through the gears and up to temp, drain, and repeat. Bet everything looks a lot cleaner and it's probably running pretty good. Now go ride that beauty!

Does the engine start and run?

If so, I would go to Walmart and buy the Super Tech 10w-40. I would buy a couple of quarts, then pour some in until it seems to clear up the color. After that, I would fill, run it a bit, then drain and fill again, then evaluate.

Call up the local motorcycle repair shops. It won't be cheap, but it is not a super difficult task.

One thing I can tell you for certain is that it IS NOT that color because of leaking coolant.

Pull the clutch pack out and soak it in some fresh oil , some folks have used kerosene to flush out the bottom end, I'd probably do like KDXG said and buy the cheapest motorcycle oil I could find, run a quart through, run it, drain, repeat half a dozen times. That looks like oil that has sat and absorbed moisture over years, if you got nearly a quart out then at least all the seals and bushings were not left to dry out. Then go ride it.

I'm in the process on flushing it. It starts very easy. I only have ridden it conservatively because the front brake isn't working. Funny thing is Jeff called me today.

I agree with the rest of the gang. Unless there’s an obvious problem after you get the bottom end flushed with oil, I’d ride it.

Be sure to slosh your drain liquid around inside the engine by leaning the bike over to the left a few times.
