200 v 220 by VIN?

Hi. Quick question. Looking at a KDX and the guy said it’s a 230... I said they made a 200 or a 220. He said he was told it was a 230.

Is there a way I can tell when I go to look at it?

I know there are big bore kits that go to 225.

Thanks

the VIN on the steering tube will start with JKAK likely and the next should be a D for KDX. 10th digit is the year code V=97, w=98x=99, y=2000, 1=2001 etc. As for the motor it will be stamped on the top of the right case half and be something like DX20012345 or DX22012345, with the 200 or 220 indicating the displacement and the last 5 digits the serial number. On the right side of the cylinder IIRC near the intake it should also be marked with the displacement. 200 is like o.198l and 220 is 0.219l. You can't get a 220 to 230 without a lot of work on the KIPS.

For USA models: (this is for some 1995+, maybe all?, not sure, did not check EVERY, SINGLE, ONE)

1995 - 2006 KDX200 VIN starts with JKADXNH.

1997 - 2005 KDX220R VIN starts with JKBDXBA.

All that does is tell you the frame.

To add to bufftester's reply, KDX220R is 216 cc (0.216 l). The Eric Gorr "225" is actually 223 cc.

A few KDX's have the last four numbers of the cylinder part number cast into it. I know "E" does inside the KIPS cover on the left side. (1569)

The following pics are stolen from eBay sellers by ME. (links may be broken before long)

1995 - 2006 KDX200 has 1742 on the left, rear side:

1744 is KDX220R.

Thanks guys! Ill try and check it out after work. I am pretty sure this is a 200. He sent me the VIN and the year code indicates it is a 96 which from my research tells me the 200 was the only option that year. But ill look at those serial numbers.

Is the Eric Gore kit a whole new aftermarket cylinder or does he use a stock 200 cylinder and bore it out?

He used either one I think. Power valve flapper has to be reshaped.
