after a full engine rebuild my bike is still not running well and i now think the problem is the ignition coil, can anybody confirm that the cheap ignition coils you see on ebay will fit my kdx220sr 1997. in the photos on ebay it looks like it only has 1 wire coming out of the coil where as my original coil has 2 wires coming out of it

It has no battery, I wasn't aware that there was a kdx model with a battery. It does have all the lights and indicators and a dash with all the lights on it. Magneto seems to be different also

I take it your lights don’t run unless the motor is running. I’m going to assume your original: coil has wiring for the lights that’s probably why has the extra wire

its a 1997 kdx220sr so i think that makes it a H series, lights don't run unless the motor is started, i tested the coil yesterday with 2 different multi metres and cannot get any reading on the secondary windings and close to zero resistance on the primary windings, when i connect the spark plug and kick it over i have a spark, sometimes its a blue spark and sometimes yellow. i am running a 35 pilot jet with a soldered up straight diameter needle and it is still running rich at almost 3 turns out on the carb, thats after a full carb rebuild and engine rebuild so i am now turning my attention to the spark side of things

good tip thankyou jason,i knew mine was an sr model but didn't know it was a B series. i watched a couple of youtube videos on testing coils and have now realized that the testing procedure given in the service manual doesn't match my coil,i finally worked out how to test it and i am getting almost zero reisistance at the primary windings and 12k ohms on the secondary windings with the spark plug cap on so would this be the cause of my very poor idle. i'm going out today to see if i can track down another coil but here in thailand this bike was only available through private import so its not easy to find parts

Is it not the same part number as the USA coil?? Compare part numbers, but I thought it was.

You have spark and you have a jetting problem so stop looking at the ignition system.
Check your float bowl height and make sure that float valve is fully shutting off the gas flow.
Clean your air filter good and oil it with a mix of engine oil and grease (very little mixed in).
Take your pipe off and seal it to your face and blow into it. You shouldn't feel any resistance to flow. If you do then clean out the silencer.

I have done all of that. Clean out the pipe with caustic soda. Float height set using clear tube method, jet block gasket o ring replaced, full engine rebuild, 1173 needle, 35 pilot jet, runs rich at idle and no throttle response in the lower Rpm's . More than open to other suggestions

forgot to say that, yes new factory reeds, a new factory air filter from a klx250, RB carb so it would be a number 7 slide i guess, using clear tube method fuel level at the float bowl mating surface which works out to be 19mm float height
