Surging idle on a 1981 KDX 250. Any ideas where to start? Leaky intake boot?

kind of sounds like it is out of fuel (i'll skip the Slingblade reference for now)
maybe air getting in
you are missing a vent hose
the caked up caulk on the boot does not look like a good sign for air integrity!

To me it sounds like you have a clogged idle circuit passage
I would say you should bust that carb apart and clean the piss out of it with carb cleaner
+1 though for vacuum leak in the intake boot as well
I'd replace the gaskets anyways for poops and laugh

Thanks for the input!
I`ve cleaned the carb thoroughly so I`m pretty sure that`s not the issue. I`m leaning towards an air leak, through the intake boot more than likely. The boot is as far as I can tell the original from ``81 and is full of cracks. I`ve tried to fill the cracks as much as I can, but it seems I might have to bite the bullet and get a replacement part.

Wrap it over and over with electrical tape and see if it changes. Beyond that, starter fluid spray will make er rev up!!

If you spray starter fluid on suspected areas, and if it has a leak, it will suck in the highly flammable fumes and she will run STRONG for just a second. Rev sound will change.

I took Katie (Yup, I named my bike Katie X) out for a ride today for the purpose of making some adjustments to the air screw. lo and behold , it made a significant difference! She runs much better. Not perfectly, but well enough for me to really enjoy riding!
