I have a 2001 KDX200.

I was tightening the shift lever and noticed that the shifter shaft
has some movement in (towards the case) and out (away from the case).

Can you guys tell me whether this is normal or is it and indication of a problem?

How much movement? I have about 1mm on a fresh shift shaft, I'd think that is okay

It's not a ton of movement. I'm guessing between 1-1.5mm.

I seem to remember around that much wiggle room, too.
