I'm working on a top end rebuild and have been trying to scrape off gasket material. I'm having a heck of a time getting
all of it off, since that cardboard stuff is really stuck on there. I've been using a gasket scrapper and trying to be careful not to scratch the aluminum, but there's still some gasket material that is being stubborn and I can't seem to remove.

Any recommendation on and easier way to remove this stuff?

I use a razor blade, maybe spray some contact cleaner on there to loosen it up.

A guy at the auto parts store recommended a product called Goof Off. It works really well just let it soak for a bit.

Someone had a thread on this about two weeks ago.

You can use a pneumatic angle head die grinder with a small hook & loop head with emory cloth.

A lot of parts stores don't carry any kind of gasket remover. That is why the local parts store recommended Goof Off. Better than ordering online, paying more for shipping than the product costs and waiting a week to finally get it.

Weird to not have that. Seems common around here. Maybe soak in brake cleaner, then go up to carb cleaner if not strong enough.

Be careful with gasket remover chemicals.

There are many different types on the market. Most of them are a caustic type chemical meant for iron and steel joint faces. These caustic chemicals can do damage to aluminum. If in doubt, try it on a non critical surface first.

I usually use a sharpened gasket scraper. A fine file can also be used to get down to the aluminum joint face.

Soak it in pbblaster over night

I've had good luck with saturating the gasket with simple green and letting it sit a day or two, keeping it wet. Then a gasket scraper or good sharp razor blade

Definitely not the way I'd do it.

I've had good luck soaking them with WD-40 and then scraping off. I'm sure PB blaster has the same effect.

Unless you are in a hurry, soften with liquid, then scrape and repeat. Look into a popsicle stick as a scraper.
