Can I get away with it?

Hey guys, so now that the weather has turned and I've gotten a handful of rides in on my new/old KDX I'll be doing some more thorough maintenance. First on the list is new sprockets and chain, and while I have the front sprocket off I need to replace the oil seal around that shaft where I have a small leak. My question is will I be able to get away with trying to replace this seal without splitting the cases? I know it can probably be done, but thought I would try and get some opinions on if I can get away with it or if it's not a corner I should be cutting.

My 1986 does not require case splitting for that. I am not familiar with any bike that requires case splitting for countershaft seal replacement. If I'm understanding you correctly.

You're probably right. I was just talking about it with my friend Pat who has a 96 of 97 H series, he thought I'd probably have to open it up to do it but this was after a couple beers after all!

1. You should not need to split the cases (at least on my 1999 you don't).
2. You need a manual. Step by step instructions.

You DO NOT have to split the cases. You DO need to maybe drain the transmission oil, then do it, then refill the oil. Why? Because that seal "seals" in the oil.

It will leak. Don't ask me how I know, and I won't tell you to learn from my mistakes. :busted:

Thanks for the response guys, this is looking more and more like a dumb question as a look at the thread haha. This rookie really appreciates all of this forums wisdom none the less.

Not dumb at all, but clearly explained in my manual. Got one yet?

I suggest that one replaced the collar, seal and o-ring(s) as a group, along with a new sprocket circlip.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Just got the repair manual in the mail along with the seal, collar, o-rings, and circlip.
