I went to move my shock on my 87 in the garage and it is leaking hydraulic fluid all over the place from the rebound adjuster knob, obviously the seal has breached.
There appears to be no schematics from the parts diagram from Kawasaki, does the Kawasaki service manual show you how to break down the shock and service it ???
I am sure I could track down a replacement seal. I am pretty sure I will be ruining the knob in the rebound adjuster and the compression knob is already missing.
My question is, is there a replacement unit for the 86-88 shocks in case I can't get replacement parts - ??? I.e. 82-85 KX, etc.., or an even newer model.
Anyone got a line on replacement knobs, or is this a trip to Ace Hardware to hope for the best - ???

Shock rebuilds are pretty easy call race tech they have tons of shock parts even for the real old stuff. Just ordered from them to rebuild the shock on my 83 it490
1990 KDX200 FMF Fatty, Answer VFC silencer, VForce 3 Cage, Wiseco Piston, KX125-J series KYB USD fork conversion, Race tech goldvalves, J series front brake assembly, air-box snorkel removed, Acerbis Headlight, KX450F Front fender, Pro Taper RM bend bars, ASV front Brake lever, MSR Clutch perch and lever, RB Head mod, 36mm PWK carb, Trail Tech Kickstand.

Can you post some pics? Leaking from the rebound adjuster does not sound good.
If you replace the whole shock, 1986 - 1988 is where you need to look.

It might be in my best interest to send to Fredette racing, odds are Jeff has the replacement knobs to go with it.
Ya, leaking through the knob itself, not good.
Normally I would be able to do a simple service and change shock fluid and recharge w/ nitrogen.
I just don't have the parts to replace and speculating that Jeff Fredette does.
Shaft appears to be corrosion free, which is the biggest hurdle and not leaking through the shaft, so seal head appears to be OK.
With the heat cycles we have in our Northern & Southern valleys here in California, it is not unusual to have a 40F difference in
temperature which plays havoc on plastics and rubber.
The only thing that makes sense to me is that the shock shaft must be hollow and that the rebound is controlled with a needle
as the rebound circuit is nowhere near the main reservoir, ie on the other side of the shock well away from the reservoir.

The shaft is indeed hollow with a tapered needle inside. Good call.

Tried posting photo which is not that great in the first place, so hopefully this link works.
Since my project started, I always had the rebound circuit facing upward, moved it where the
rebound circuit was facing down and she starting leaking pretty good
