Engine RPM suddenly shoots up

I've just finished putting back together my '99 220. I was driving it around the block a few times yesterday, just to see if everything was OK and bolts weren't falling off, and as I was clutching to come to a stop, the RPMS quickly went to max. Just shot up. The throttle handle/cable was not stuck open. I tried rev'ing it, but nothing. Had to hit the kill switch. Kicked it over, rode another 5 minutes or so, and it happened again. I'm a new rider, so kind of freaked me out.

Any idea what would cause this?

High RPMs are typically a sign of an air leak/lean condition.

Could be a chipped reed or carb boot not sealing properly.

Yea check and make sure the intake boot from motor to carb is on all the way and tightened down. I may have done this to her bike once or 4 times.

Had a similar problem on a CR250 a few times, only the kill switch wouldn't shut off the engine. (To kill it I'd have to put it in gear and let out the clutch while applying the rear brake.) Turns out it was an air leak; the base gasket was installed wrong. Look for air leaks, but it's not necessarily the base gasket on your bike.
