What are some proven methods of installing this mechanical water pump seal? I just broke the new one and will be ordering another, maybe 2 just in case. Please help

That's how I broke the new seal the first time, maybe I need to search for a different socket like a thin wall because the bigger socket I have will not fit down in the tight spot to get it seated

You don't want to push on the carbon or the ceramic pieces with anything hard and you have to use steady, even pressure. No shock loads. We have seals like that for 2.5" and 3.0" shafts here at work that cost up to $1500. Gota be real careful putting them in. I would see if you can find a small piece of PVC pipe or plastic tube that you could use as a 'push stick', not a metal socket.

Thanks I will try that good idea. If I can find some that will slide over the ceramic end to be able to get to the metal cup

You definitely only want to press on the metal cup, NOT on the carbon element, those are SUPER brittle.

That's what I thought I was doing but my socket I guess was touching more of the ceramic end than I thought. It's a very tight space on that cover to get into.

Any luck on the install, im having the same issue right now. Also is there another oil seal between the mechanical seal and the sealed bearing?

Yes. On an H series at least.

OK so I found the oil seal behind the bearing. My next question is on the sealed bearing does the seal go to the oil or the water?

I am assuming mine has never been replaced and the seal is to the water. I think that makes sense as the bearing would then have lubrication.

That's what I was thinking but I thought I read somewhere that seal went to the oil, the sealed bearing does have grease in it....I'll have to flip that around... And since that is true I can assume the oil seal would have the flat side to the water.

That is the way I installed the oil seal was the flat side towards the water. But I also pointed the sealed half of the bearing towards the water as well
