Plastic brake rotor guards: how important?

I have a '93 E series. The rear disc brake rotor guard is broken off. The front one is in good shape. My question is....how important are these items? They seem pretty fragile. How many of you don't bother riding with them at all? What are the pros and cons?

My bike came with one.....first and only thing I took off the bike...Useless, unless you ride in a ton of mud....I mean...What is that piece of plastic going to protect?

I'll send you mine, for the cost of shipping, IF you really need one....(it's still a POS)....
I even took the aluminum one that my 95 came with off...and sold it.....JUNK.....
I DO however like my "Sharkfin" rear rotor protector....I bounce my rear disk off of sh!t...I tend to steer the front clear of those obstacles (for obvious reasons)

I have never needed one in the front and only like the shark fin on the back. I have never felt I needed more protection than that and I ride a lot of rocks.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-KTM-300-EX ... CS&vxp=mtr On the E series it bolts to the brake carrier...The H bikes have to have a new carrier with the fin "built in"....I'm going to replace my H carrier with an E carrier and use a bolt on "fin".

in the last five years I've seen one bent rotor from a fall.

Front or back they are good for deflecting stones/mud away from the disc, they also help with keeping mud off the discs & calipers which in turn help keep the brake pad wear & corrosion to a minimum ( ideal if you ride in sticky muddy conditions) .....I run one on the front but never bothered with one on the rear.
The only real down side is if you run a "metal" one then you may bend it after a fall or Clip a rock....plastic ones at least flex .

I'd guess if ask what's the downside in running a plastic front disc guard? I mean if you already have one, then why take it off as it certainly provides some protection as mentioned in the previous post. I get it if you don't have one and want to save the $ I guess, but Pros run them for a reason.
