Cylinder opinions

I just pulled my 220 cylinder, piston/cylinder show no deep scratches and appear to be in decent shape. However the cylinder walls show a lot of glazing and no visible cross hatching can be seen, pictures:

There also can be seen on the jug (under Reed) to read 3/12 (in pink on left) and I don't know what the other says (in green on right), picture:

I would like some input and opinions if this is normal, and I can scuff it up with oil and scotchbrite pad. Or will this require more in-depth repairs (plating)?

Plate it! Can't go wrong and will last for years. Plating (nikaseal) is better than the Electroplating that Kawi put on these cylinders to begin with.

It looks like the factory plating may be worn thin in a few places. It is hard to tell without scrubbing the glazing off though. Try scotchbrite pad and some lubriation, then wash it well and post up another pic.

Thanks for the help so far guys! I just used a green scotchbrite pad and premix and scrubbed the walls. Here are the after pictures:

why would you worry about it glazing? that just means the rings have matched the cylinder and it is sealing good. scratching it up is only for when you install new rings so they will wear in to match the cylinder.

I thought that glazing was a sign for the cylinder wall coating getting thin. But that's good news then, thanks.

How does the typical nikasil replated cylinder last? How many pistons could it handle (provided you change them regularly) before it wears out?

Worn? Yes.
Worn out? No.
Where exactly in the middle? It depends on who you ask.
What are you using the bike for?
Can you afford a new piston kit and plating or are you on here asking for a majority to comment and tell you not to spend the money? (it happens a fair amount)

Depending on how often you ride, how hard you ride, etc., it might be a candidate for "ride it one more year" then replate it next winter.

I could let that go one more year with new rings, but only if I could afford to do the plating. The last "piston slap" i did was on my son's 220, just to get the stock piston out of it. This summer I have my 200 getting an EG 225 kit and a new left hand case, which means full rebuild. IF I can afford it, the 220 will get replated and a new piston.

Lots of good info here from you guys that have been around the block a couple of times.

About how much could one expect to pay for Millennium Technologies to re-plate a KDX cylinder?

Also, do you think it would be a good/bad idea to send the KIPS out to them also for their power valve service? I haven't tore into the KIPS yet, so I didn't know if it was worth the $50 bucks to pay them, or if I should just do it myself? I'd like to learn and do it myself, but it would be nice to have a pro do it right the first time...

I paid $450 for replate, piston kit, top end kit. Did the Kips myself, it sucked. I went through a local shop to get this done. If you go through Millennium Tech yourself and source your piston yourself, it could be cheaper.

Okay, thanks for the info. The cylinder is packed up and getting shipped to millennium. The head is getting shipped to RB. I figure I would do it now since I have the time/money. I took the kips out myself, it really is not that bad at all. I just wanted everything super clean. I already have a new piston/rings and sourced all oem gaskets.

Nice. Do you mind sharing an approximate cost for the replating alone? I did some more reading on taking the KIPS apart, you are right, it does not seem that bad. I think I will give that a try also.

Yep, I didn't email or call ahead. I printed out there form and filled it out, I checked call with estimate. So when they call, I will let you know.

I believe that most of the platers list prices on their sites. I know powerseal does.

Everyone just talks a lot about Millennium, so I was really curious to see what they charged. I checked their site, just gives info, no price. It probably depends on the size and condition of the cylinder.
