My '93 is now one month old to me. Today I buttoned up the rear suspension that was undersprung and neglected in the bearing department. I put some recommended new j ets and needle in. Did some back yard riding and it feels way better than my first ride on it did. This was my second. But, I am old school when it comes to brakes. Drums Ive got down. Disc binders are a mystery. Seems like I have to pull up on the rear lever to get them to release. How come?

Bad master cylinder, brake caliper assembled wrong, brake pad pins worn out, spring missing from the brake lever.

I have the spring

Check the pins that hold the brake pads in. They are a wear item and need to be replaced occasional and are often ignored. If there are any wear marks, get a new set. If you need them, I recommend the Tusk replacements as they are not allen and don't strip nearly as easily.

Those pins are frozen to the caliper. Not going to be easy to remove.

I had to replace a caliper because those pins broke when trying to remove and replace them. Tried drilling / easy out and just destroyed it.

I am a fast learner. I know a lot more about this now than yesterday. These pins may render this caliper useless. But, for now, I still have some usable brake pad left. I lubed up those pins the best I could and got the pads sliding a little better. Its usable for now. I guess that Im in the market for a caliper now. Anyone have one with those pins already removed?

I just picked one up, I'll check to see if the pins come out......after my nap.

discs IMO are way better and simpler than drums. if you need advice on how to bleed them we can give you a few pointers

I've bled brakes on some autos, trucks and vans. So, I used that experience to expel some of the old brake fluid and flush things out a bit. Then added some DOT 3. So, I've done some bleeding already on this bike. And, yes, I agree....discs stop better than drums do. At the speeds that I ride at I barely need either.

So...speaking of these hanger pins that the pads slide on....Can the brake pads be removed without removing these pins? I couldn't seem to wiggle the pads loose for that.

No, the pins must come out.

I got the pins out of this caliper. The caliper need to be rebuilt (it will work w/o the rebuild, but needs it) and new pad pins.
