I just bought an 88 KDX and was wondering if someone could tell me what the baseline suspension settings are? I need an owners manual but they are kinda pricey and I'm not sure how much info they actually have. Does anyone have an owners manual for a 86-88?

Here's Freddettes recommendations for the '89:
I recommend setting the compression adjuster (located at the top of shock) at about 6 clicks out for faster terrain and 12 clicks out for the slower more technical terrain. The rebound adjuster (located at the bottom of the shock) should be set from 8 clicks out for faster terrain up to 14 clicks for the more technical stuff.

Turn the clickers to find the adjustment range, then report back.

If the oil is old, it won't make much difference.

I have the Owners manual and repair manual from Kawasaki for my 87. They're identical except for the carbs. I can give you what the manuals recomend if you need it. If your suspension hasn't been rebuilt since 88 it's not going to help. Let me know.

Can you email me pictures of the manual where it gives suspension base settings? Is the top shock knob rebound or compression? Thanks for any help. Rich.

Another question is how much oil do the forks take? A lot more info on the liquid cooled bikes out these but not much on these old air cooled machines.

Ok here is everything you asked for. If for some reson you can't read them [if you click on them and make the pics bigger, readable on my end] let me know and I'll just email them to you.

I also emailed them to you. I put the pics in the post in case anyone else is looking for the same info. Good luck with the bike. I plan on putting the carb of the 88 on my bike next year. It's supposed to deliver a crisper throttle response. I have no idea how much or if I even need it after all the mods I have done to my 87, but it's the last thing I can do to truly say Ive done as much as I can. If you haven't put an exhaust on it yet I highly recommend it. I put a DG pipe on this summer and to say it woke the motor up is an understatement. You can but 1 on ebay for 200. DG no longer makes or stocks it. The seller had 5 left last time I looked and it's the only place I could find 1. If you can afford it, do your self a favor and buy it.

Thanks for the pictures, that's what I was looking for. Surprised there is no fork adjustments on the old KDX.

You can stiffen them up with thicker fork oil or add air or take air out to stiffen or soften the forks. This being one of the reasons Put the front end off a 1991 kx 125 on. All in all the stock forks simply do no work well. Especially if you ride hard. Happy to help , Let me know if you need anymore info.
