My '89 came with a DG silencer (not a spark arrestor) and I need to get a spark arrestor to be legal to ride in a lot of areas. Since I need to buy one either way I'm curious as to whether the stock E-series spark arrestor is actually a superior part compared to an aftermarket one like an FMF TurbineCore or Pro Circuit. I know the factory arrestor is considered good enough that it's not worth switching to an aftermarket unit. I also understand that the factory unit doesn't require repacking and that appeals to me. If an aftermarket arrestor is significantly lighter or produces better performance, though, that might sway me in that direction.
So would I be better off finding a good, used, factory arrestor or buying a new aftermarket one? Cost and sound levels aren't really a concern. Thanks.

The E-Series stock silencer does have packing to be re-placed. I have replaced the packing in two stock silencers, a '91 and a '93.

Your thinking of the '95+ bikes where you don't repack them. Personally, I like the factory one on the '89-'94 E-series bikes. Yes, they do have to be repacked every so often but it isn't as bad as the aftermarket units. The packing is only a small piece of the overall silencer. In the pic below it is listed as #2. BTW, I have a factory silencer I would let go. However, it's in need of the grommets.

I also like the stock S/A silencer on the e-bikes, although I'm currently running a DG silencer, no S/A.

Hey guys, I'm working on rebuilding a tattered e model (92). It has a fmf gold pipe, but no silencer/spark arrestor in the end, just an open can.
Ss109 - I think I know you from TWBD. Did you ride with Chris on Saturday(I didn't make it this year)?

Edit: I think I'm mixed up. I used to know someone who worked with the OHV program. Anyways, I'm in Tucson with a kdx200(e). Just found a broken LH KIPS valve.

Still wondering about the answer to OP, as I have to figure out what to get.

Edit: just picked up a stock 92 s/a silencer on ebay, around $85 shipped. Hope you find a better price on something you're happy with, OP!
