klx300 fork advantages

I’m thinking about doing the klx300 fork conversion and have a few questions.

Besides the cool look, are there significant benefits compared to just removing some of the shims from the shim stack on the kdx forks?

Also, what maintenance should be done on new forks or old forks while I have them off. I assume just the fork seals and regrease/replace the steering head and axle bearings. Am I missing anything?

I’m about 170 lbs. without gear so one benefit is not needing to change the springs. I’m a beginner to intermediate rider and mostly ride open trails with some hill climbs. My biggest gripe with the forks is how hard it hits when landing even small jumps.

Thanks,
Pete

Less overhang, better control, and I found they were much more compliant over a variety of surfaces, whereas the KDX stock forks even resprung were really only good in the slow stuff.

The stock fork springs are best for riders 120-130lbs in gear.

Does this apply to the KLX300 forks as well? I thought I read they were setup for 160-180 lb riders or something like that.

The heavier stock springs over the KDX are really the biggest advantage most riders will feel from the KLX swap. (But they're still too soft).

Try the shim stack mod first, I think you'd be surprised of the difference it makes.

I put klx forks on my 2000 kdx, and they really improved the accuracy and rigidity of the front end. It's well worth the time and expense if you get them cheap enough.

If I can find a decent deal, I may go for the fork upgrade. Otherwise it sounds like the shim stack mod and new springs would be a big improvement.

Thanks for all the responses,
Pete
