KIPs actuator rod stripped?

Hi guys, I have been redoing the top end of my 96 kdx200 and carefully cleaned out all the kips components, lined everything up, and the subvalves/exhaust valve are all working smoothly when operated by the drum on the left side of the case under the round cover.

The problem is when I go to hook up the actuator and claw gear on the right side of the bike. It appears that whatever is clocking or timing the large rod coming from the lower crankcase is not functioning. I am able to spin the rod shaft, the one you are supposed to support while undoing the left handed nut, 360 degrees with no resistance or engagement.

Is this normal or is the mechanism in the case broken and requires pulling the case cover? Will opening the clutch cover permit access?

No not normal, the pin on the lower end of the shaft that slides into the actuator is broken off.
Pull off the inner clutch cover and you will probably find it.
Part number 13236-1260.

thanks, I pulled the cover and the entire piece was missing, guess the previous owner broke it and chucked it.

Should run much better with the kips working.

Just make sure the pin is not in there. You don't want to find it the hard way.

I looked closely with a flashlight but it is gone and the 2 screws are out as well. I'm itching to break it in but I gotta wait on a $10 part to come in the mail now :butthead: I just bought this bike and have never ridden it before.

you can break it in without the kips actuator hooked up just fine
the kips just wont open and will be stuck in "low RPM mode"
