Oil dripping from PV rod rubber boot?

Hi guys

Noticed on my last ride a fair amount of spooge was dripping from the boot, as pictured:

It was enough to leave a buildup on the engine case below...

Is this something to worry about? Causes?

thanks!
Aidan

Edit:

I see someone else has the exact same issue a few threads down!

Some info on how to best check the seal/o-ring would be great. Is it straightforward?

Thanks

Yours isn't near as bad as mine. I'm replacing the exhaust valve main shaft seal, and the sub valve shaft o-rings. Looks pretty easy. I'm a novice though....we'll see :partyman:

It's bad - I cleaned a lot of oil off the cases after my last ride.

Never an issue before, so I assume the seal has finally let go. Given it's happened so suddenly, is it more likely to be the shaft o-ring or the main seal?

I'm new to this so I couldn't tell you.

I would only be guessing. Just need to pull it apart and find out for certain.

I guess either way it's engine out to access everything?

Given the issue is either the main shaft seal or the sub valve shaft o-ring (both on RHS of engine) is it possible to remove these two parts without pulling the head/removing the actual sub valves?

Cheers

The head definitely needs to be removed. Maybe the cylinder could be left on the engine, but I have never tried it.

I would suggest doing this the right way though and pull the cylinder. It is going to be so much easier that you will gladly pay for the base gasket. There is another seal on the other side of the head that you should replace since something on the other side is worn and leaking. And finally, the valves will likely be dirty or gunked up and could use a good cleaning.

How do we clean the valves?

You are right - do it once, do it right.

Just a shame to have to rip it apart though, as the bike is literally flawless otherwise. I checked operation of the PV recently looking up the exhaust port, and all seemed quite clean.

It was me who had the same problem awhile back. I cleaned the whole powervalve. I suggest taking the cylinder off. If only like another 6 bolts and a whole lot a easier

I don't think you can get the subvalve shafts out without taking the cylinder off. The frame is in the way.

You also can't get the main shaft out because the KIPS actuation shaft coming up from the lower end is in the way.

When you take that claw gear off the KIPS actuating shaft, be aware that it is LH thread and that you will break something down in the motor if you don't keep that shaft from turning while loosening the nut
