I have a 2005 (same as your 1998) and we run 32:1 as it's what (if memory serves) the manual calls for. On gear box, I use Rotella 10w40 synthetic. Many use ATF (F type) with good success and I would argue one over the other. Key IMO is changing it when appropriate versus sneakin in a few extra hours.
Above all get a manual so you are not rollin blind and you can stay on top of the maintenance. These bikes are a ball and bullet proof if you treat them properly.
Welcome and I hop you find this site as useful and welcoming as I have!

Sorry, I meant I would not argue which is better - Rotella/conventuals oils versus ATF. Many seem to have great success with either choice.

i run klotz bean oil in my bike (mostly because it smells better then any other oil out there
i mix it 37.85 to one, that one i can mix 100 ml per gallon, and i can use a 350 ML waterbottle (filled with oil of course) to fill up my tank
for bottom end oil i prefer ATF type F, the bikes seem to shift nicely that way

Shell Rotella 15w40 in the gear box.
Walmart Supertech mixed somewhere between 32:1 and 43:1 (I am mostly at very low rpms). 4 oz per gallon is 32:1. 3oz per gallon is 43:1
