KDX Tusk street light kit and battery charging capability

I have a street light kit from tusk installed in my plated kdx220 and it works really good, the part of charging the battery every 3 or 4 rides is less than convenient. Looking for solutions I found this modification using a sealed lead acid battery and a rectifier. http://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/867723 ... -tusk-kit/.
Now the question: can I rewind my stator and run a set up like this one in the kdx for battery charging purposes only?

Here is a pic of the bike with the kit installed: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j9crrorx39vmi ... 3.jpg?dl=0

Yes, you can rewind the stock stator and have enough juice to charge the battery and still use headlight/taillight full time. Where did you find room for the battery? in the airbox? Good looking setup.

if you can run a 2nd yellow wire down to the coil and remove the side that goes to ground. Solder this to the new yellow wire and connect both yellow wires AC input. This will make the full wave rectifier work much more efficient.

Thanks to all for the comments. I'm going to install the battery in the airbox area since there is enough space for the installation and to protect the battery from the elements.

Thanks about the gas tank comment is a gift from good friend of mine.

I going to avoid the ground thing for the moment since is only for charging purposes and I want to left the stock wiring as is from factory. will see how it works first and then if there is a problem I will float the ground. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah, if you only want to charge the battery you can run a full wave rectifier at half power should be no problem. If you do decide to float the ground then you must also change all the grounds for your lighting system so that they don't go to frame points but only to the negative battery terminal. Not difficult, but a lot of extra work. The right way to do it is to float the ground, and you could do that without radically altering the bike wiring. Just disconnect the spade for the ground side of the lighting coil and use a spade on the additional yellow wire and a small screw/nut to tie them together along with a couple wraps of tape to insulate the whole thing. You can google the drawing for a Baja designs kit and have all the info you need.

Thanks I will keep it in mind in case I want to go the floating ground route. :supz:

Ok battery and rectifier installed but only getting about 12v to the battery wires when the lights are on. I'm going to do a reliability test for a couple of days to let you know how it works.

At the moment the total investment is about $20 so if it works it worth the pain. Here are some photos:ImageImageImage

Any updates on how this worked out? I'm in the process of doing the same thing.

Hi, sorry for the late response, I sold the bike almost a year ago to a friend and the bike is running without any issues.
