hey guys

I noticed the countershaft seal on my 220 was leaking so I replaced the actual oil seal, the two o rings and the collar
filled her back up and noticed the next day a fresh puddle underneath the bike

I took of the sprocket and it appears the seal is actually weeping around itself, like it is not seated properly

im afraid im going to have to get a new seal and install that
do you guys have any tricks on keeping it from leaking again ?

maybe put a small bead of silicone down in the case before I install the seal ?


I remember ages ago I had a job rebuilding engines and we used some gooey type of product to seal oilseals into the case but I cant remember for the life of me what it was called, only that it was green

common issue, check my sig for newb info there is a post about that. fairly easy

I did mine a couple months ago, make sure the shaft is smooth with nothing to tear the seal when you put it on.

but I got over 2400 posts

(I did check it but only found something to refurbish fork seal, whole different animal because the seal seems to leak around its bed, not the seal itself

its not leaking through the seal itself, but around it, like the seat of it is gouged or something

didn t see it was you. I thought there was a thread about fixing the leaky seal. I'll see if i can dig it up.

on top of that...I knew all that, my issue is not that I cant figure out what to replace, my issue is the new seal leaks around itself, most likely a scratch in the case or so

my issue is how to seal this up before I replace the new seal with a brand new seal and have that leak again
(in one of the posts I found a link to TT and someone there mentioned the use of RTV around the seal, so it did help a little)

yup it was mrwibben. funny how jokes can get lost on forums no matter how hard u try.

I have the same problem with my bike, tiny hairline crack in the casing at the bottom of the seal. I clean it up real good and lay the bike on its side while I apply JB weld, but no matter how well I prepare it the "patch" lasts just a couple of months. Ive used red silicone around the seal itself as you mentioned for added insurance that it won't leak

I actually asked the motorcycle expert at my job and he said to clean the case and seal with paint thinner and then apply a coat of JB weld over it

so ill try that and see if it helps

if that doesn't help ill get another seal and use the silicone around it before I install it

if that doesn't do the trick ill have to get some heavier weight oil
