Hey guys, I've heard it discussed that it's possible to swap an H top end onto an E model but I haven't been able to find any real info on it using the search function. I'm considering doing the swap in the future to rid myself of the troublesome E-series KIPS. It's just a thought at this point, but I'd be interested in researching it. Thanks.

As far as I know....it's a no go. Completely different between power valves and KIPS systems.

That's the idea of the swap. You could get rid of the problematic E-series KIPS and upgrade to the better design of the H. I know that you would also need the entire right engine cover (inner clutch cover), water pump, all the KIPS parts, etc. at a minimum.
I have heard of it being done, though I guess that doesn't necessarily mean that it can be. I understand that the bottom end of the E and H bikes are identical or at least very similar. I think it's just the right-side of the engine and the top ends that are different.

You'll need the right inner cover and pretty much everything under it. That is the big part. The bottom ends are pretty much the same, but almost everything that bolts to it is different.

Anyone know the scoop with the exhaust? I imagine that you need to use a H-series pipe, but does it fit into the E-series frame or does it need some serious reshaping?

If the jug fits on the E bottom end(they use different base gaskets I think the only difference being the H has two guide/dowel pins to line up the jug which you will have to exclude) you will also(likely) need to have some custom upper engine mounting made to fit the H cylinder to the E frame.

Coolant hoses wouldn't be a problem. But as it was mention earlier, you'll need the right side covers, water pump impeller cover with the definite chance some things won't align, I.e kips governor and lever shaft, kickstart, clutch actuation rod.., also the front kips cover thing on the front of H engines is going to be a tight squeeze

But hey if you decide to tackle it, keep us up to date on it

The exhaust ports are in the same location between the E and H--i.e., your E pipe will align correctly with the H port. I'm betting you can use the E pipe with no modification.

You'll need to make or modify the E head stay brackets, because the H head has the head stay attachment offset to one side.

You can reuse your E Kick ratchet mechanism and your KIPS governor--they are the same in the H. The H clutch is different, but the E will fit with no modification. However, I'm not sure the E pusher shaft will work in conjunction with the H clutch. YOu might need an H pusher shaft.

It's totally do-able. There is a thread on here somewhere of someone who actually did it. I'll try to find it.

i was under the impression the kips was totally different? the actuating rod looks like a different design and location. :hmm:

That's correct. That's why the right-side cover from the H needs to be used. The KIPS actuating mechanism is housed in the right cover, while the valves themselves are in the cylinder. So if you swap the top end and the right-side cover everything should line up and function properly.

I looked and looked but could not find the thread where a member completed this transplant. It has been several years back. IIRC all that he used was the inner/outer clutch covers, kips rod, cylinder w/ all kips bits, and head. It may be that you'll need the water pump gear and/or the governor. I wouldn't purchase those bits until you test fit the clutch covers and see if everything meshes up right.

interesting I don't recall that thread at all.
That'd be great if we could find it (and if it is doable) for all the e serie guy that want to keep their bike running :supz:
Would it still have the legendary e bottom end pull though? probably not since you swap cylinder. :?
