2001 220R My headlight and Tailights are very weak and surge low and lower, is this a sign of stator trouble or something else

Perfectly normal
The stock lighting coil is only good for about 35 watts at peak
Your best bet is to run a LED taillight and rewind the coil

Yup, at idle and low engine speeds there isn't enough output to properly power the lights, so they dim and surge. Once rpm is up a bit (maybe 3-4,000) then things should stay consistent brightness.

thanks for the replies, the light doesn't supply enough light at any rpm, I think the coil will need replacing, i like the LED taillight idea, I've found a higher output coil online, just hate to eat 100 bucks, of course I hate to eat a tree in the dark too, thanks fella's

there is a thread on here somewhere about rewinding a lighting coil
pretty straight forward
if someone can pull it up for you I can send you the community coil of wire

Here's a link to the led taillight that I am running.

There's also a very detailed post about how to rewind the coil. Think it was Slick_Nick

Yeah, rewind it yourself. 15$ in materials and about an hour of your time.
