How to check and replace brake pads

Hi
Can someone please explain how to check and replace front brake pads (1990 KDX 200 - E2). Never done this before. Bike new to me.

I have bought the Cylcopedia online manual, but it has a missing/incorrect photo (shows the clutch assembly instead of the brake) and fails to state whether you need to drain the brake fluid or not (it looks like you might have to, but I cannot tell for sure).

I've searched this forum, and read 20 or so pages, but there is on single explanation.

Regarding checking the pads, I have seen different images showing what to look for.. but some show different numbers of layers (when looking end-on) - some 2 some 3. So I'm not sure exactly which is the actual pad part.

Thanks very much
Tim

Hi. Welcome to the forums, and congratulations on getting a KDX.

Thank you for mentioning which year and model KDX you are asking about. That REALLY helps and not everyone remembers to do it.

You DO NOT have to change the brake fluid. Remove the two bolts, then pull the caliper backwards, off the rotor.

Hopefully, they show the brake pad minimum specification on the Cyclepedia manual.

what isn't shown in the diagram is that a lot of times there will be a line running down the center of the brake pads that acts as a wear indicator

if your pads have this line clearly in there then you good, but if it looks like the line was there and is faded they need to be replaced

of course, if your pads never had this line this info wont help you one bit
