I have 91 250 . The black cylindrical thing with two wires mounted to the right side of the air box behind the side cover. Is it a capaciitor ?

I believe you are referring to the CDI, part of the ignition system.

The CDI sits on top of the air box . Im talking about a smoothing capacitor for the lighting circuit.

in the states they were pretty standard with all their 12V systems...Stator, CDI, VR, head/tail lamp, on/off switch, kill switch. Being as you're down under you probably have an SR model? If so could be a road legal lighting thing. We didn't get the SR in the US

Yep its a capaciitor. Put it on another bike that I removed the battery from . Works perfect
