Newby with stator/flywheel problem

Hi I'm new to the group- it's my first day. I justed recieved a 88 KDX 200 that I might end up buying. I thought the engine was locked up, but when I removed the flywheel I found the magnets broken off the flywheel. The stator coils were damaged too. So the engine is good, but I need a stator and flywheel. I would like to find out what parts off a newer model KDX I can use with this bike. There are many newer type flywheel/stators on E-Bay and I'm wondering what you guys think would be a good combination.
Thanks,
Rich Dominguez

Did you get the flywheel and stator answer you needed?I own a 87Kdx with the same issues.I read that a tecate3 will work with mods.I haven't got any for sure answers.if you know anything else please let me know. THANKS REYA reyanketis@yahoo.com

I was fighting with the ignition system on my 87 a year or so back.
Didn't know what was going on (ended up being a pile of compounding issues) but I was looking to replace the entire ignition system.
From what I remember (which is pretty foggy), there just aren't any other parts that are compatible. I think the Tecate 3 flywheel will work, but you have to re-slot it, or you have to re-clock your stator. Either way, you're getting into customer stuff pretty quickly, and I can imagine it could be hard to get it running right.
As for putting a whole new stator / flywheel on it, I was looking into this, but didn't find anything obvious, and a lot of the times, the coil output wasn't correct for the 86-88 KDX200 CDI ignition box.

I would have to look, but I think I have some spare parts kicking around in a box somewhere, if you're still in need.

Cheers

Hi. Do you have any details on what he did and what it cost? What parts were used? Thank you.

The 1986 - 1988 models have that problem often.

Sorry I been out a town,I got the flywheel on line 'used' for 50.00 bucks, had a stator plate, coils were bad. JEFF install new coil & happened to have a lighting coil laying around.then he drilled new holes in the stator plate to match the flywheel.total for all that was just under 200.00 bucks, With shipping. Call me if any questions. 724 797 4633 hope this helps you. RICK

Thanks for letting me know. (well all of us) As I said, over time, a fair amount of those bikes eventually get that problem.

Which year model flywheel did you buy?

NOT 100%but I think a 93,kdx200.when I sent stator to FRP I also sent the flywheel to make sure it would work.

I think Ricky stator has the tecate3 flywheel new for around 100.00 that's the one that works.

Thank you for the reply. I have spare flywheels from 1989 - 1994 KDX200's. Some day, I will have to try to get one to work on my '87.

Thanks again for everything.

Any newer kdx200 flywheel will work. The stock stAtor plate needs to be reslotted for the angle difference between the older style stator plate(parallel coils) to the newer style( angled together coils) plate. I clocked mine in a milling machine at my work. I think the newer matching stator plate will bolt right in and match the new flywheel.

I've just discovered that the flywheel on my '88 kdx200 rebuild is missing a magnet. Any idea where I can get one? or what specs I'd be looking for? (i.e. magnet strength?)

Otherwise any idea where in South Africa I can send a newer flywheel to have it customized to fit the older style '88 config?

Otherwise... :) Anyone have any spare units that I can buy that will fit right on? :)

Dave

I used a 91 or 92 KDX250 flywheel on my 87 KDX200 that had broken magnets. You'll need to enlarge the slots on the stator as its to retarded in the factory position with the later flywheel. You'll also need to space out the cover by a couple of mm or use the 250 flywheel cover to fit the later flywheel as its a touch wider. Its a fairly simple fix and I've gone about 10 hours on this set up and its never missed a beat.
