Hi guys, is this what I need to rebuild my rear shock? I've found a place that will recharge it,just wondering if this is all I need?

That is the seal head. It contains the dust seal, oil seal, bushing and top out bumper.

When "rebuilding" a KDX shock, I would check the bladder, bottom out bumper, piston o-ring and piston band. If the piston band has never been replaced, then it is past time for it (and the o-ring).

Hope you have an angle grinder handy.. although maybe they are replaced from the bottom after removing the shaft from the rebound adjuster..

bench grinder will do...flat file will also work if you don't mind the time involved

If just the seal head I think it can be replaced from the bottom no?

That is not how it is normally done. Disassembling the shaft/clevis is usually not how I have read it to be done.

It's actually something I've been meaning to do before I put everything back together on mine..

Here is a disassembly and removal of the seal head.

1. Put the bottom clevis in a vice so the shock piston is pointed up and loosen this baby off:

2. Unscrew clevis linkage and remove the first retaining nut you loosened. That's it, you're able to remove the spring bracket, dust shield and seal head out the bottom. Removing the piston does require grinding off the peening off the top and removing the valving assembly from the top.

Thanks for showing what that looks like.

I think whenever anything is done on the shock, taking the nut off is how it usually goes. I do a light sanding on both faces of the piston, for example.

yeah I meant to do that anyhow so I could clean out the rebound mechanism with some solvent before reassembling...Wasn't 100% sure it would work either. Still deciding on which shock oil to buy..

Or a 5w fork oil...or tranny fluid so I've heard, but that is closer to a 7w-10w and only works in forks

I just rebuilt my 97 rm250 shock. I wish I'd thought if removing the clevis, but i got the peening off with a dremel in about 2 minutes. I used(and have used previously) hydraulic oil in my shocks and it always did me right. It usually has anti-foaming and anti corrosion properties as well. It's very light as well. This rm shock feels absolutely wonderful with it, but other shocks didn't like the oil as well.

This is what i went with...it's a little on the heavy side at 7wt but I can always go light on the compression and rebound. Besides it's an E, I have all that glorious cushioning to compensate

Jason... do you (or any member) have any experience with the Moose seal heads.. ? RaceTech is all I've found.
Also, who is a source for the above mentioned parts...? (piston o-ring, band, bumper, ect.)
None of the online OEM fische show these items available... Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums! :partyman:

I do not have any experience with the seal heads from Moose / All Balls. I read on the suspension section at ThumperTalk from one poster that it had some stiction, so I was disappointed. I want to sometime buy one just to see if OEM seals and such can be put in the aluminum housing instead of the stock steel head.

Kawasaki unfortunately does not sell all the parts separately. I pieced together a kit from several vendors to sell last spring. I could not find any vendor selling a kit.

TIP: If you look at the o-ring under the piston band, and it is rubbed smooth on the sides, then it is past due for replacement.

1989 and newer USA KDX shock parts are all the same (besides the KDX50 of course)

Hi all,

This is my first post here. I just picked up a 2002 220 and I am rebuilding the shock. I think I've found all the parts except the piston o-ring and piston band. Can somebody point me in the right direction please. Thanks so much!
