PJ and CEL/DEL needle questions

Well I have decided to remove the JD needle and go with the tried and true CEL or DEL needle. Right now I have gone back to the stock (R1174K) in the 3rd clip with a 45PJ and 155MJ. I'm a little rich right now but the temps are dropping and I'm looking for my winter setup. What has everyone done with the CEL/DEL needle position to begin with? I know there will some adjustments but wandered where to begin.

Look like I'm still going to have a little wait. Received my needles today but did not get the CEL and DEL needles. I actually received a CEL and DDM. Looks like I'm going to have to make a phone call tomorrow and try to get a replacement needle mailed out. The saga continues.

I use the DEL in the # 2 position. I had to adjust the pilot jet leaner, but may have needed to do that anyway. At 70 degrees, I was at a 38 PJ and the plug looked a little rich still overall.

Took the family to Carolina Adventure World (elevation around 500' and 50 - 60 degrees) for a few days of riding and finally got around to putting the DEL needle in the KDX. I had previously been jetted:
42 PJ
155 MJ
R1174K -3 clip
AS 1.50 CCW
elevation around 1000' (home)
Installed a 40 PJ and put the DEL #3 clip position in and right off noticed bike seemed way too rich. Lot more smoke and "spooge" than with the previous jetting that I also felt was too rich. I know before it was rich in the meat of the power and never really felt the "wick" the throttle and loft the front tire in first gear. Power seemed better with the DEL since I could just throttle first gear to loft the tire. After riding the first day I moved the DEL to the #2 clip position and adjusted the AS to 2.0 turns CCW. I swear the bike just still seems too rich. I attached a tach and was able to notice the RPMs continued to increase all the way to 3.0 turns CCW on the AS. I stopped at 3.0 turns so not sure what would have continued past that point.
Is that showing I still need to go leaner on the PJ? I always thought those running 38 PJs were 220s and not 200s. I did notice in the prior post by gsa102 he was running a 38 PJ but don't know what the temp/elevation are for him. Didn't have any smaller PJs so should I order some or stop where I'm at? Below is a pic of my custom "shorty" silencer showing the result of a couple hours ride time at the end of day 2...
It's bad enough to show oil spots on the fender and frame rail under the fender. What do you'll think I should do or is anyone else running smaller PJs with CEL/DEL needles?

Why did you pull the JD needle?

Wasn't overly thrilled with it and was instructed to keep the OE stock PJ and MJ. Just seemed odd to me. Probably should have put more tuning effort into it but was in a hurry before a ride and needed a somewhat known combination and just never went back to it.
