Too much oil?

So I changed the oil warmed the bike up and let it drain for 5 mins added the whole quart of oil as I read in other threads here and when straight up the sight glass is completely full am I good or is there too much in there?

A friend of mine put a whole quart in his KDX220R. The vent tube dripped a fair amount into his airbox, which then dripped all over his engine and such.
I am WAY outvoted here by saying just fill it to the middle of the glass, like the manufacturer says.

I use 650 cc just so it's at the top of the sight glass when the bike is level, that's what they put the sight glass there for.

I have used a full quart and not had any issues. I have also used the 750ml as recommended and not had issues.
You will find that after the bike has been run the level will drop some but with a full quart it will still probably fill the glass. You can get an idea of how much too full it is by leaning the bike to the side and watching the glass.
In conclusion, put in as much as you want. Go by the book if you want to. Or put the full quart in. If you have issues with seepage with the full quart then use less. If not then you should be fine.

Same experience here. I fill to half the site glass as I don't want the mess.

Interesting. the vent on my 89 runs down with the carb hoses and not to my airbox, so I never experienced that. I can see that being a valid concern though!

GET A MANUAL, YOU BUM!!!!
In stock - new configuration on 1986+ full-sized models, the crankcase vent hose goes into the airbox.

Yeah, the crankcase vent tube should run to the airbox. Just dangling if you end up in water deep enough to submerge the hose while the engine is running the crank can develop enough negative pressure (vacuum) to suck water up that hose. If you spend no time around long, deep water crossings then no worries.

Are you sure? Since this vents the gearbox / clutch/ primary housing, and not the crankcase, it would typically be at atmospheric pressure. The only way a vacuum would occur would be the sudden cooling from a water crossing, and then only maybe. ........On second thought, if the vent hose were submerged, I suppose Murphy's law could apply and water could be sucked into the gearbox. IMO not likely, but possible.

How about, if it spits oil, let it have a chance at landing on he filter?
Water crossings would be better with it up high.

My '89 is the same way.

I have looked. seems no place for it to go in the airbox unless I just stuff it through the airbox drain hole thing. guess I will consult Ye olde manual.

The full qt is generally recommended to people who complain about clutch noise. It will quiet it down some. I've never spewed oil after a full qt.

The hose entry is up high.

I have the manual and there is nothing in there on it. Even looking closely at the pictures, it don't see a way for it to get inside the airbox.

What?! What is that?! It is a hole. (top/right of the airbox)

I think they are talking about the old outdated E series bikes. The air box (did they even have air boxes back then?) might be different.

Hey now! I may have one of those around here somewhere.

Does your E have that hole in the airbox? My 89 does not, other than the two holes I drilled in about that same spot to mount my H series VR.
