Trans oil disappearance

Hi. I have to refill the trans oil after a few hours of riding. The oil level will go from top of the mark on the sight glass to the bottom after a few hours of riding. I don't see any oil leak anywhere. I suspect that the culprit is crank seal because there's alot of splooge on the muffler and the bike has been running blublury.

I want to replace the piston and rings. I figure that I'll check the crank seal while I'm at it. But from what I've been reading, crank seal replacement is a monumental task. So, I'm getting scared.

Question: How much should bike shop charge for new piston, rings, and a crank seal?

Is this something any bike mechanic can do? Or do I have to take it back Kawasaki?

Thanks!

Any competent bike mechanic can do it. Labor prices vary. Ask your local riders who they recommend.

Any GOOD bike shop should be able to do it and charge a lot more than it should cost. But it is not that bad to do your self.

I'm lucky. My mechanic works for cheap & does a good job. I leave the more time consuming stuff to him.

take the motor out of the bike and take head and jug off. Clutch side componets and flywheel. have shop split case and put new seals and crank bearings. By disasembling down to case you can save half the cost

Mine has just started losing oil too - plenty of smoke, burbling on start up...

I had just switched trans oil to 2 parts ATF & 1 part SAE 15-40 engine oil.
I am going to switch back to gear oil to see if I still lose out. Will that help?

Gear oil? As in 80w-90? That can't be good for the clutch plates.

Sorry David, back to straight oil, no ATF...

I wouldn't think mixing motor oil and ATF would be a good idea. Gear oil is less than ideal also, but better than some things you could be using. Regardless of what you are running in the transmission, you should not be losing transmission oil. It's either leaking it or burning it.
