I know this sounds silly but I have to ask. Is the E series swingarm steel or aluminum? I want to make sure what it is made of before I start stripping it for fresh paint. I thought it was steel but a magnet doesn't seem to stick to it.

It is made of uranium. Don't smoke around it.

Great, now I'll have to deal with the Atomic Energy Commission.

Come on now.
Even my 1987 had aluminum.

Thanks Jason. I honestly thought they were steel.

Yes, they are uranium, but their danger doesn't lie with smoking. The danger is if you get another KDX swingarm within a couple inches of it and accidentally start some fission. It cooks all the grease out of your wheel bearings, severely shortening their life span, and it damages your DNA.
:)
Yeah, the KDX swingarm isn't the sexiest chunk of aluminum out there, but it's still aluminum!

Has anyone stripped the swingarm and left it unfinished or just clearcoated it? Aside from the Kawi all my other bikes did not paint the swingarm but not sure if they had some other type of treatment to keep them from corroding.

I stripped mine to bare aluminum no clearcoat with no issues. Every month or so it starts to stain a little but I just hit it with some fine steel wool for a second and it's back to new.

I ended up painting mine and like how it looks better than the raw finish underneath.
