since the wifey is thinking of getting into dirtbikes aswell ive started looking for a trailer aswell as a bike for her
in my quest i came upon this little doohicky
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-trai ... a6&vxp=mtr

would you guys use this?
i wouldnt mind if i were hauling a street bike but im just not sure if i wont the bike to "run" at highway speeds for an extend period of time

i guess i could take of the chain before hooking it all up but i dont think id wanna fiddle with it

so, thoughts?

(not actually thinking of buying one BUT i would have no problem looking at the pictures and welding one up myself)

I don't think I would. It'd eat your knobby alive.

You'd need one of those little tow truck wheel sets they put under the tires of a car if the car is in park with parking brake on. Otherwise your tire isn't gonna last long, like sped said.

would you at all change your mind on that if you knew i run a DOT trails tire?
(my KDX is plated and 80% of its miles are comuter miles)

MT43? It will certainly hold up better than a knobby, but I'd still want to do something to preserve it from wear when I'm not actually riding it. Would suck if half the wear on your $100 tire was from being towed. For short distances though, sure, why not?

It is going to add a lot of wear to the chain and sprockets as well as everything else that is turning.

I use one of these
http://www.harborfreight.com/400-lb-rec ... 99721.html

It will need some adjustments to the tiedown points but it works pretty well. Most of the dirt bike magazines have a coupon that brings the price down to about $110.

for short distances i would actually ride it :supz:

Bates, it was the extra wear that kinda worried me
i like the idea of the hitch thingy you got, i just might consider buying one someday

still looking for an affordable trailer though
if this whole thing goes through with the wife getting into riding i will need a decent trailer to haul 2 bikes and some camping gear aswell

I use a hitch carrier(like the harbor freight one), its great. Loading/unloading much easier then truck when your tired, and the van I use gets 25mpg on the highway.

If it were me, that's exactly what I would do. Why spend money on a temporary solution when you already know what you'll eventually need?

Harbor Freight also has the small 4x8 trailers that work pretty well. Just get the one with 12" wheels, add some wheel chocks, tie downs, and you could carry up to three bikes if you wanted.

but like i said, i was looking through the ebay i came across this trolly doohicky and i just had to wonder what everyone else thought of it

a coworker of mine has a trailer he bought at an auction to scrap out
if the base of it is worthy ill buy that (if the price is right of course) and make that into a trailer

(SS109, you posted as i was writing this, ill check out HFs website right now)

Find one of the 10% off coupons and you would really be rocking it! :supz: I can tell you, I was going to do the same thing myself until I bought my truck. The trailer sure would have been a lot cheaper though!

The trailer setup is real nice in that you can set it up to carry your fuels(s), tools, etc. that you don't have to unload when you get home. Just back the trailer in where you want it, unhook, and your done!

No way I'd haul my precious KDX with that "doohickey". Way to much wear on the parts that turn while the rear wheel is on the ground. Get yourself a trailer.. My 2 cents.

Back in the 1970's I had a hitch that towed the bike in that same way. I used it once to tow my 1976 Maico from NYC to Philadephia, about 100 miles. I was worried about the knobbie also, but the tire didn't seem to wear at all. I disconected the chain to minimize wear on the gearbox. The only problem I had was the toll collector on the New Jersey Turnpike would not allow me to drive on the Turnpike. They concidered it an illegal tow. I had to get off the highway and drive to Philly on Route 1.

quick question for the guys who have bought a trailer from HF (specially in MI)
does it come with all the paper work needed to get it plated?

or is there more needed?

My brother in law used one of those "doohickeys" to tow his bike from Portland to our house to ride. Somewhere on the trip, he hit a bump and his KTM 250 went into second gear and bump started itself at 80 miles an hour. He said he thought it was weird that he heard a two stroke on the freeway. By the time he got halfway here, his motor blew up and the tire and rim where destroyed from dragging after the motor locked up.
